or those visiting for the
first time, Somewhere along the line, I developed a passion for building and studying various forms of shelters, built by hand. Having grown up in a community that celebrated independent thought, design, music and art, most everyone I knew was either building a house, planning or living off the grid, all with one thing in common. Handmade. Interesting that it takes a grid-locked economy to suggest these techinques 'might have be a good idea', while used for centuries around the globe. I've totally infected my husband Jeff with building and remodeling, and we've started our 5th Project, a turn of the century home which we are remodeling Italian eco-friendly style. One creation that remains as mysterious and beautiful to me as ever, is the native american tepees - of which I lived and built, for over ten years. |

| After 13
summers
of building and
living in Tipis, I got a hair-brained idea to construct a small cordwood cabin. There was lots of snickering. No running water, electricity, hand mixing cement, laying course after course of wood, lime, & stone - while swatting clouds of mosquitos. Every mason will tell you that working with lime plasters is hard labor and unforgiving, but a totally rewarding experience. After 2 summers and a little help from my friends, I had a very snug, beautiful little (900 sq ft) house to live in..with a cost of about three thousand dollars and just wee bit of sweat equity. I didn't hear anymore snickering. Girls can build. ![]() John Prine Says: "Throw away your TV, move to the country, build you a home, plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches...." |
